FIJI ordered to cease organizational activity by university amid hazing investigation

The Daily Campus has learned that the Delta Tau Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta has been ordered to cease all organizational activity pending a university investigation into hazing.

FIJI is the second fraternity to receive such a notice from the school within a week, after Pi Kappa Alpha received a similar notice last Friday.

The order was received by the chapter Thursday evening.

According to police records, SMU police issued a conduct referral for an organizational hazing offense at the FIJI house Wednesday around 9 p.m.

The department has not provided details regarding the offense.

“SMU received information that the Phi Gamma Delta-Delta Tau chapter may have violated the University’s Student Code of Conduct and policy against hazing,” university spokesman Kent Best said via email. “SMU will not tolerate hazing in any form.”

The fraternity was already facing conduct probation until spring 2019 for “irresponsible conduct.”

IFC President and FIJI member Adam Byer would not comment on the situation Thursday.

This is a developing situation. More details will be released as they become available.
