First Residential Commons Olympics

Boaz Commons took home first place and bragging rights at the Residential Commons Olympics Friday. Resident assistants, faculty-in-residence, residential commons directors and commons residents participated in the new event.

The games began at Westcott Field with a procession of the Residential Commons crests and a speech by Vice President of Student Affairs Lori White. Before the lighting of the RC Olympic torch, participants joined in a unifying chant: “We are the Mustangs couldn’t be prouder. If you can’t hear us, we’ll shout a little louder.”

Throughout the afternoon and evening students participated in Olympic events at the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. These events included tricycle races, Connect Four, bubble soccer, wallyball, human battleship, kickball, ultimate nerf and cupstack.

Favorites of the games were bubble soccer and human battleship.

The Residential Commons Olympics marked the beginning of a new tradition at SMU that will bring residents together at the start of the fall semester.

“It will unite the commons,” said Jennifer “JJ” Jones, director of student development and programs. “We’re excited to bring some spirit back to the university.”
