Going for the top of C-USA

The Mustangs kick off their four-game away streak this week in a matchup against Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. on Oct. 10. The team feels confident after this weekend’s shutout against Memphis. They are ready to play to their full potential against the Marshall Herd and “keep our momentum going,” head coach Tim McClements said. Marshall is currently leading Conference USA rankings.

In the 2008-09 season, SMU lost to Marshall and Memphis, and according to McClements, both losses were unexpected and disappointing. Mustangs lost to Memphis on the road 2-1 after overtime and lost to Marshall at home 1-0. The team has already insured history will not repeat itself after their weekend win, and it will only take one more game to continue their season of vast improvement.

The team has suffered several injuries this season, and those players will remain out for this matchup, as well in hopes that everyone will be able to return to the field during later games. Even though the team has been forced to work through some different positions and new players, they have continued to find success as well as work through the difficulties.

Coach McClements said that the team has found its success this season because of a “great effort by everybody.” The team will look to Dane Saintus to continue his goals and assists in this game. Payton Hickey is also nationally ranked for his number of assists this season. McClements also said that after last week’s goal Paulo da Silva has broken a dry spell and is hopeful that da Silva will continue to contribute to the accomplishments of the team.

“We have a number of players who are dangerous,” McClements confidently stated.

The Mustangs have found their bearings when on their own turf; it is now time to see how the team plays when away from SMU. After the game against Marshall the team will play South Carolina, Tulsa and Kentucky. The Mustangs will not return to Westcott Field until Oct. 31 to play against University Central Florida.
