LGBT continues quest for senate seat

LGBT continues quest for senate seat

The SMU Student Senate met Tuesday afternoon to discuss a proposed legislation to give senators an opportunity to submit legislation anonymously, legislation for a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity seat in Senate was discussed, as well.

Alex Ehmke and William Badarak proposed a piece of legislation that would allow senators to submit anonymous pieces to ensure the voting was based on the idea alone and not one who submitted the idea. Senate already has a rule in place that protects people when voting on controversial issues.

“We already have something that protects people voting on controversial issues,” Ehmke said. “Why not allow senators to anonymously write legislation on these contentious issues as well?”

For several weeks, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students have been attending these meetings in hopes of passing legislation that would grant them a seat in the senate.

Tom Elliott attended to meeting to support the addition of an LGBT seat, saying he thinks, “LGBT is worthy of having a seat because it will provide communication between sexual minorities and other minorities.”

“The student body has been shown a lot of support for this,” Dedman II Senator Lizzie Cochran said. “I feel that it is our responsibility to represent this piece.”

The new piece of legislation was introduced and will be voted on in the future.

Other issues discussed included upgrading the irrigation system on the main quad, creating an Internal Affairs Board within the office of the Dean of Student Life and changing the title of the engineering senator.

Senate will not meet next week because of Thanksgiving Break. The next meeting will be in December.
