Six different Mustangs contributed a goal in the win over the Bears, lead by redshirt-junior Will Smith with two. The Mustangs were able to tally 23 total shots including 11 shots on goal, while allowing only two total shots by Central Arkansas and zero on goal.

“The main thing was to get the result, which we did,” said Head Coach Tom McClements. “But also to make sure that defensively and offensively we were doing the things we’ve been working on.”

The game started off slow for the Mustangs, but 12 minutes into the first half redshirt-freshman Abdul Yassine connected with freshman forward Mauro Cichero. Cichero was able to avoid several Central Arkansas defenders and score the first goal of the game and his second on the season.

Four minutes later junior midfielder John Lujano scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick, set up by Central Arkansas goalkeeper Harrison Veith.

The score makes Lujano 3-3 for penalty kicks on the season.

In the 26th minute of play, freshman midfielder Bryce Clark evaded Bears defenders as he brought the ball down the right side of the field and found junior forward Idrissa Camara for SMU’s third goal of the game and Camara’s fifth on the season.

“We have to keep winning and keep performing well,” said Camara after the game. “Good performances bring out good results.”

From there SMU seemed to take control of the game with one more goal by senior midfielder Andrew Morales coming in the last 40 seconds of the first half.

SMU outplayed Central Arkansas in every facet of the game by halftime, holding the Bears to zero shots on goal while the Mustangs enjoyed seven as well as a 4-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, redshirt-senior Damian Rosales chipped in his third goal of the season from 10-yards out, set up by an assist from Cichero, The goal extends Rosales’ streak of games with a score to three.

In the 86th minute of play, junior defender Danny McQuaid set up an incredible bicycle kick from six yards out by Smith, which counted for his first career goal.

McQuaid was one of three players who saw action for the first time this season in the win over Central Arkansas.

Almost exactly how the first half came to a close, so did the second. With 40 seconds left in regulation, Morales crossed the ball to Smith who was able to tap in the Mustangs seventh goal of the game and his second on the season.

The win improves the Mustangs home record to 7-1 and is the most goals scored in a game since SMU defeated Centenary, 8-0, in 2006.

SMU takes on No. 24 USF next in a conference game that will test the Mustangs talent Saturday at 7.p.m.
