Oh where oh where have the Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue gone?No, really, Ed Board wants to know where the school colors are inthe SMU Bookstore. Instead of proud red and blue universityparaphernalia and apparel we seem to be stuck in a springtimenightmare of lime, pink, tangerine and lemon. In fact, the veryfirst display of clothing in the store is an attractive display ofSMU sweatshirts more reminiscent of an overloaded Easter basketthan any easily identifiable university.

According to Elizabeth Jackson, general merchandising managerfor the Barnes and Noble SMU Bookstore, the trend in universityapparel has lead towards these “eye-catching” pastels.Now, Ed Board understands why any store would want to followcurrent market trends. But at what cost to the students’ability to show pride in their university?

To be sure, there are shirts of the Harvard Crimson and YaleBlue variety in the store. However these are in the back corner ofthe store and are easily overlooked. We already have plenty ofpastel colors on campus due to the sorority system and theirt-shirts. Do we really need to have SMU merchandise to go golfingin?

If these colors remain the most prominent display, studentsshould seriously consider a change to the lyrics of “PonyBattle Cry.” Ed Board suggests:

Hail to hot pink and baby blue,

What are the colors of S-M-U?

Yellow, right? Lime green’s bright,

But, keep the tangerine in sight.

What ever happened to the

RED, BLUE and WHITE…?

Pastels are the cutest in the land.

So with our teddy bears in our hands,

Where’s the M-U-S-T-A-N-G-S’

And the RED, BLUE and WHITE?

The SMU bookstore should have some SMU colors in it, right? IfBarnes and Noble is interested in profiting from current trends,why not just move the merchandise to the back?
