What started as an exciting Election Day for supporters of Democratic Governor candidate Wendy Davis ended in disappointment as Republican candidate Greg Abbott was declared the winner just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

SMU’s Women’s Interest Network sponsored a watch party in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center’s M-Lounge.

Freshman Political Science and Business Management double major Fairooz Adams was in attendance, and noticed how the mood changed throughout the night.

“The majority of people here were Democratic supporters, so there was a lot of excitement around Wendy Davis,” he said. “We knew that Abbott was probably going to win, but people still wanted to support Davis.”

Although the watch party was for a political event, it was also something people could attend to just hang out.

”A lot of folks came here to socialize, and people left after the Governor’s race,” Adams said.
