Roman Oravec, Janus Robberts, Luchi Gonzalez. Do you know these fellow Mustangs? Well you should. These are just a few of the names that help SMU maintain there athletic clout. They are not football or basketball players, but they do dominate the sports that no one seems to care about.

Roman Oravec, a senior on the SMU Track and Field team has been named to the inaugural Verizon Academic All America Men’s Track & Cross Country team. Oravec was nothing short of a sensational college athlete.

During his tenure here at SMU he was a six time All American and a two time Western Athletic Conference champion in the 800m. He was one of only 15 students named to the inaugural team.

Oravec’s athletic success was only half the reason he was honored. While at SMU, he majored in Marketing at Cox School of Business. Amazingly, he was able to graduate with a 3.61 GPA. That’s time management folks.

Oh, and Janus Roberts. Let’s just say this guy knows how to throw his weight around. The 6-4, 270 pound South African brought SMU some well deserved recognition when he won the discuss and shot put competition at the NCAA Division 1 track and field championships.

For all you Sports Illustrated readers, go get your June 10 issue, there is a huge picture of your fellow Mustang. If you see him, get him to autograph it for you.

Let’s talk about Luchi Gonzalez. This guy is the silent assassin.

Gonzalez was a senior on last year’s soccer team that almost brought it home.

He won the Herman trophy – So, What’s that? Well, every year the Soccer Hall of fame picks the college soccer player of the year and this year it went to Gonzalez. Its the equivalent to footbal’s Heisman.

If you haven’t already guessed, this is the first time a SMU student has received this award.

Gonzalez will continue his atheltic career playing major league soccer for the San Jose Earthquakes.

So there is your lesson for the day. When it comes to athletics, there is always something to be proud of.

Venture out next semester when you have the hunger for Division 1 domination.

Go see something you haven’t seen before and bring a friend.
