Google and China

Google and China are at a standoff. Google has tried to circumvent China’s famously oppressive censorship of its site by redirecting millions of Chinese viewers to the uncensored site in Hong Kong. In response, China has cracked down on its Internet users and blocked them from the site.

China has made much progress in the past few decades as it has begun to transition to a more vibrant market economy. But many changes need to be made, especially in the arena of human rights.

By placing pressure on China to loosen its grip on information, Google is standing up to an abusive government. Everyone who believes in human rights should stand behind the search engine as it fights for intellectual freedom
