SMU Basketball has added another major piece to its 2017 recruiting class.

Ethan Chargois, a 6-8 power forward from Union City, Oklahoma, verbally committed to SMU just minutes after the clock struck midnight on Saturday, October 1. Chargois made the announcement in front of a hometown crowd at Union City High School’s Midnight Madness event.

Chargois is a three-star prospect in 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. According to Scout.com, Chargois chose SMU over offers from Houston, Kansas State, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Duquesne, Texas-San Antonio, Florida International and Oral Roberts. In the 2016 Nike EYBL summer circuit, Chargois averaged 10.1 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game with his AAU team, Team Griffin (Oklahoma City, OK).

Chargois is just the latest commitment from Oklahoma, which is emerging as a true pipeline state for SMU’s program.

In 2015, top 100 guard Shake Milton (Owasso High School/Owasso) became the first top prospect from Oklahoma to commit to SMU in the Larry Brown era. Point guard Dashawn McDowell (Southeast HS/Oklahoma City) followed Milton to The Hilltop in 2016.

With an existing commitment from 2017 point guard Elijah Landrum (Tulsa Central HS/Tulsa), Chargois gives SMU the potential to have four Oklahomans on its roster for the 2017-2018 season. The Mustangs would have the same number of players from both Oklahoma and Texas.

Chargois, Landrum, and 2017 commit Everett Ray (CHANT Homeschool/Addison, TX) are expected to sign their letters of intent in November. All three members of the Mustangs’ 2017 class have verbally committed to SMU in the past three weeks.
