Men 0-0-1, look for wins on the road against South Florida, New Mexico

The No. 20 SMU men’s soccer team departed Thursday for its third consecutive Hurricane Classic Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

The Mustangs will face No. 4 University of South Florida Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 3 University of New Mexico Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

SMU had its season and home opener against Campbell last Friday.

The Mustangs had a rough first half, but were able to pull it together after halftime.

Freshman Leobardo Vazquez fed the ball to fellow freshman Eddie Puskarich, who netted the first goal of the match in the 54th minute from 25 yards out.

Campbell’s sophomore Ricki Gaez responded with a header nine minutes later, after receiving a lobbed pass from senior Mitchell Cardenas from the left side.

The match went on to double-overtime, only to be ended in a draw game.

The Bulls opened up its season against Michigan last Friday as well.

Michigan had taken the lead in the second half of the nationally-televised match, but the Bulls brought it home with a goal each from defenders Brenton Griffiths and Ben Sweat.

The Bulls entered the Big East’s Elite Eight undefeated last season.

The Mustangs (0-0-1) and the Bulls (1-0-0) have only met twice, with the most recent encounter taking place in 2005 when SMU pulled out a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

The Mustangs and the Lobos (1-0-0) have faced nine times, with SMU taking the advantage in the series with a record of 5-3-1.

The two last faced each other Sept. 15, 2006 at the New Mexico Classic, where the match ended in a double- overtime draw.

Last season the Lobos were undefeated with an 18-0-4 record.

New Mexico remained a top-ranked team in the country for weeks, only to fall to USF in the Sweet 16.

SMU will then head north to square off against Dartmouth on Sept. 7 and Harvard on Sept. 9.
