More from Moore in SMU win

On the back of another solid performance by sophomore guard Nic Moore, the SMU Mustangs (2-0) defeated the Rhode Island Rams in the Curtis Culwell Center on Monday night, 89-58.

SMU was dominant in both halves, outscoring Rhode Island by 13 through the first 20 minutes of action and followed that up with 52 points in the second to the Rams’ 34.

Friday night’s season opener against TCU showcased what the Illinois State transfer was capable of, as he led the team in points and assists, and against the Rams Moore continued his early season dominance. He finished with game-highs in both categories again with 20 points and seven assists.

The only other Mustang to get into double-digit points was Ben Moore with 13 points. Ben also aided in SMU’s ability to outmuscle Rhode Island, tallying a game-high nine rebounds.

Defensively, the Mustangs had another solid performance to keep the Rams down to just over 30 percent field goal shooting on the night and just two of 15 on attempted three-pointers. SMU on the other hand looked very economical with its shot selections, making more than 55 percent of its total attempts and 46 percent from downtown.

The only dark spot on an otherwise great evening for the Mustangs was their free throw percentage. SMU made less than half of its 24 shots from the charity stripe, and that is something head coach Larry Brown must be concerned with.

In the meantime, Brown and the Mustangs will prepare for their first true road game of the season when they head to Fayetteville, Ark. this coming Monday for a battle against the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, hoping to go for a 3-0 record in back-to-back seasons.
