No. 14 SMU men’s soccer picked up its sixth-straight win Saturday night in Cincinnati, beating the Bearcats 2-0. With the win, SMU improved to 12-2 on the season and 4-1 in the AAC.

For the second-straight game, sophomore forward Garrett McLaughlin was SMU’s hero. Two of his six shots found the back of the net; it was his second straight game with two goals. He also accomplished the feat Tuesday, when SMU beat Oral Roberts 2-0 at home.

McLaughlin’s first goal came early in the game against Cincinnati. In the sixth minute, he controlled a Bryce Clark pass and put it into the net. Later, he headed in a rebound in the 58th minute to give SMU a two-goal cushion.

Keeper Michael Nelson continued his outstanding play, saving two shots and shutting out his opponent for the seventh time this season. The team’s dominant defense has not allowed a goal in its last four matches. Nelson has a strong chance of being named AAC Goalkeeper of the Year for the third time in his career.

SMU has two games remaining in its season. Its next game is a match against South Florida Sunday, and the season finale will be a showdown with UConn Nov. 4. SMU and UConn are tied for first place in the conference. Both games will be at Westcott Field.
