SMU Track and Field breaks records at Howie Ryan Invitational

The SMU track and field broke multiple school and event records at the Howie Ryan Invitational this weekend.

In the 60 meter dash, Stephanie Kalu set a school record with a time of 7.36 seconds while cruising to a first place finish. Kalu was one of four SMU athletes to win her event at the invitational that was hosted by the University of Houston.

Freshman Ashlee Powers set an event record in the 5000 meter run by finishing with a time of 17:23:79. Kaitlin Keen, who also finished 11th in the mile race, placed third with a time of 17:50:47 in the 5000 meter run.

Mary Alenbratt, who finished first in the mile run last week, finished first again this week, but in the 3000 meter event. Her time of 9:42:05 was a personal best. Freshman Karoline Skatteboe also had a personal best while finishing third in the same race with a time of 9:49:85. Shoanoah Souza and Powers also finished in the top ten, with times of 9:57:47 and 9:59:98, respectively.

In the distance medley, Skatteboe, Isis Wilson, Souza and Alenbratt combined to take first place, finishing ahead of the second place team by 8 seconds.

In the shot put, Helen Perez set a season best mark with a distance of 15.29 meters, good enough for a first place finish.

Next up for the Mustangs will be a trip to Lubbock, Texas for the Red Raider Invitational on February 2nd.
