SMU volleyball shuts out UAB

The SMU Women’s Volleyball team shutout the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers for the second  time Friday evening at Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs kept a two point lead in the first set that ignited to a five point lead causing them to win 25-18. In the second set, the Mustangs lead with six points that kept the Blazers from outscoring. The Mustangs finished the set with a 25-13 win.

In the final third set, the Blazers took a 8-5 lead. After a SMU timeout, the Mustangs took lead set 14-9. The Blazer came back for a short time but it didn’t last. The Mustangs dominated the final set 25-18.

Dana Powell and Kelli Beccera contributed highly tonight hitting their 14th double-double for the season. Jessica Oliver and Caroline Younger trailed behind recording 10 kills. Courtney Manning finished with seven of SMU’s nine blocks and added nine kills.

The Mustangs come back to home ground Sunday at 1 p.m. to face off Memphis. The SMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will host a tailgate at 12:30 p.m. for SMU students.
