The SMU women’s club lacrosse team had an easy win over TCU Saturday morning on SMU’s intramural field. SMU won 12 to 6 defending their spot as No. 1 in their division and keeping their undefeated streak this season.

It was a cold and overcast morning when the girl’s lacrosse team huddled up for their pre-game pep-talk.

“Be intelligent” were coach Liz Holmes parting words as the girls ran out onto the field.

Holmes talks proudly of her girls, smiling as she discusses their leadership roles on campus and how one of the seniors just got a job lined up for after graduation.

“All of our girls get jobs in their chosen professions,” Holmes said, “You know, thats something.”

SMU scored their first goal within two minutes of the start of the game and never fell behind. Seven minutes into the first half SMU was up by three points.

The women’s club lacrosse team is in it’s eighth year and is off to a 3-0 start this season, with wins over Rice, Texas State and Arkansas. These wins have placed them No. 1 in the WCLA Division 2, above California State University, San Marcos and the University of Miami.

But despite their high ranking, the fan turnout topped out at eight people after half time. There is no where for fans to sit, so they stood on the sidelines cheering on the team.

“It’s an intramural field, so I’m not surprised,” said score-keeper Hannah Potter, a sophomore at SMU, about the lack of bleachers. “But they did just redo the field, so it’s really nice.”

The sun made it’s first appearance with 8 minutes left in the game, lighting up the path to a 6 point victory over TCU.

Senior, and one of three team captains, Jodi Morris said, “We didn’t know what to expect.”

But Jackie Gamper, another team captain, said “UT Austin and A&M; are our only real competition.”

The next SMU women’s club lacrosse game is Feb. 22 against Baylor University.
