Rejoice, for it isn’t everyday that we are gifted with such a perfect championship match up.

On Saturday, SMU forward Markus Kennedy was asked if there was a rivalry between the Mustangs and Temple. Forget that- the real rivalry is happening Sunday.

SMU and UCONN have already faced each other twice already, with SMU winning at home and losing on the road to the Huskies.

UCONN won the national title last season, but all the Huskies have heard during their reign is “yea, but SMU beat you twice.”

And all SMU has thought all season was how they beat the national champs twice but weren’t invited to the big dance.

The animosity between these two teams is strong.

Tip off is set for 3:15 and as always, we’ll be bringing you live coverage throughout.

Three on Three

The Huskies

  1. Guard- Ryan Boatright
It could be argued that Boatright was just as deserving of player of the year status as Nic Moore. After serving as the Robin to Shabazz Napier’s Batman, Boatright has demonstrated that he every bit as capable of leading this team on another deep tournament run.
  2. Guard- Rodney Purvis
Purvis is that guy who can hit just about any and every shot in HORSE. The dude is unbelievably athletic and will be a pain in SMU’s side on Sunday.
  3. Center- Amida Brimah
Brimah handles all the dirty work for UCONN. You can expect to see him mixing it up with Yanick Moreira and Markus Kennedy all day.

The Mustangs

  1. Guard-Nic Moore
Had a slow start against Temple, but made key shots. SMU is going to need Moore to be on his A-Game if it hopes to knock off the defending champs at home.
  2. Forward- Markus Kennedy
Kennedy has been the driving force for SMU all season long. He brings a toughness and grittiness to this team that no one else could. Moore might be SMU’s best player, but Kennedy is its most valuable.
  3. Center- Yanick Moreira
Moreira almost had a double-double against Temple on Saturday. Look for him to flirt with those same totals today. His performance, and Kennedy’s, will be key. SMU needs to get easy buckets as often as it possibly can, and that means winning the points in the paint battle.
