#WATCH: Renowned climate journalist David Wallace-Wells begins with an apology: Wallace-Wells does not — and has never — thought of himself as an environmentalist. Yet in the few years since he published his groundbreaking 2017 essay, “The Uninhabitable Earth,” and a 2019 book of the same name, Wallace-Wells has communicated the urgency of climate change with a potency that few others have.

“I’ve spent the intervening years in a dizzying period of awakening,” Wallace-Wells said.

Now an editor-at-large at New York magazine, Wallace-Wells shared his insights on the effects of global warming and human response at SMU’s Gartner Lecture Series in McCord Auditorium Wednesday, Oct. 20.

SMU will no longer mandate masks on campus accordi

SMU will no longer mandate masks on campus according to a university announcement on Friday, Oct. 7.

The lifted mandate is effective Monday, Oct. 11. Though masks will no longer be required in indoor campus spaces, professors are still allowed to require masks within their classrooms.

SMU originally unmandated masks this past May, yet reinstated a temporary mask mandate a week before classes began in August in response to a surge in Delta variant COVID cases.

The SMU COVID-19 dashboard is based on self-reported results, and currently shows 32 active cases of COVID-19 on campus.

Witnesses reported a man was fatally shot then pus

Witnesses reported a man was fatally shot then pushed out of a truck on Lovers Lane near the Shell gas station around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, according to University Park police (UPPD). ⁠
⁠
The victim, a Hispanic male in his 30’s was transported to Parkland Hospital where he later died of his injuries,” a UPPD statement said. ⁠
⁠
“As for the circumstances surrounding the incident, the investigation is just underway – so far, we don’t know what prompted the shooting. Witnesses say the victim was apparently pushed out of the truck moments after witnesses heard the gunfire.”⁠

Witnesses recall that the truck had two other people in it, and was a gold or brown newer model F-150 according to UPPD. ⁠
⁠

The Texas Tribune’s annual Texas Tribune Festiva

The Texas Tribune’s annual Texas Tribune Festival (TribFest) is set to begin next Monday Sept. 20 through Saturday, Sept. 25. This year’s TribFest will be virtual and features an abundance of nationally recognized speakers like Pete Buttigieg, Karl Rove, Beto O’Rourke, Senator John Cornyn, and many more.

The annual, multiday festival brings together nationally recognized names to discuss the most pressing social and political issues. In a year of coronavirus, political turmoil, racial reckoning and – somehow – much more, TribFest 2021 will feature especially compelling programming.

General admission tickets to TribFest are generally $199, but students can register online at a discounted rate of $49.

The SMU Faculty Senate passed 3 resolutions yester

The SMU Faculty Senate passed 3 resolutions yesterday asking SMU to: ⁠
⁠
1.) Require vaccination for SMU employees 💉⁠
2.) Reinstate the university-wide mask mandate 😷⁠
and 3.) Re-up outdoor air intake from 30% to 50% in university buildings 💨⁠
⁠
"[A]t least 664 IHEs across the country, including all of SMU’s aspirational peers and all but 3 (three) of SMU’s cohort peers, have required vaccination for students and/or employees,” according to the resolution.⁠
⁠
The resolution also encourages the university to incentivize vaccination among students – possibly through tuition breaks or increased fees for un-vaccinated students. ⁠
⁠
[T]he strong consensus of public-health authorities….have concluded that vaccination against COVID-19 is the quickest and most effective way to end the pandemic that has cost the nation more than 625,000 lives so far,” the resolution reads.⁠

SMU did what it was supposed to do in a 55-26 win on Thursday night.

Sure, it came against a 1-6 Tulane team.

But a 29-point victory ahead of a season-defining stretch is what SMU needed. Houston, UCF, Memphis and Cincinnati await.

SMU says it is gradually building for bigger games in November. A 31-24 win against Navy, SMU says, is part of a process.

The only issue: there appears to be a lot of process left as the season reaches its halfway point.
